The therapeutic relationships
Psychotherapy or psychological support is a two way process of responsible therapeutic relationships where one party is the customer and the other is a specialist, therapist or psychologist.
Relationship in the process of psychological counseling is a necessary requirement due to them a person/client can get a new life experience for some reasons: to understand the causes of his/her state of health, to "see" how her\his feelings and behavior influence on the reaction of other people, to understand and to accept his/her feelings, to improve existing relationship and build new ones.
The therapeutic relationship is a special focused and directed relationship between the specialist and the client, the purpose of which are the following: to establish and to maintain contact with the client and his/her emotions; to assist in awareness of the existing problems causes; to express emotional support on understanding his/her feelings; to learn new ways of behavior and overcoming life's difficulties.
That is why the therapeutic relationships are special. The specialist is attentive to his/her clients, polite, doesn’t condemn the client and doesn’t give him\her negative evaluation and never labels her\him. S/he is a kind and a responsive person. S/he may not accept client’s behavior and may not share his\her life position but a specialist treats the customer fairly and friendly. S/he doesn’t react hostile to customer’s anger and tries to help the client to understand what made him\her so upset. During counseling a specialist is calm, balanced and laconic. S/he mainly listens to the client and tells almost nothing about her/himself. S/he doesn’t try to please the customer but tries to find reasons and ways to solve the issues and remains active during the counseling.
But it doesn’t mean that the psychologist or psychotherapist counseling eliminates any need for the client’s independent work. The specialist will not solve the problem of a client without his\her active participation. A specialist task is to help people to realize the need of changing and to put his\her efforts into these changes. The specialist helps the client to learn to overcome his/her own life crises and to control his/her own lives.
This contract for the therapeutic relationships or “therapeutic contract” is drawn up for forming the active position and shared responsibility during psychotherapy between the specialist and the client. The therapeutic contract will not be drawn up in case of a single meeting.
